[Policy Report No. 141] Yu Minghui: The Important National Governance Issues Being Raised by Social Media and Its Preventive Measures
Authored on:2022-05-17
Keywords Social media public governance disinformation

Abstract

Compared to traditional media, social media is a hot topic among countries because of its wide range of users and almost monopolistic ability to collect and disseminate information, causing public governance and even political issues in the Western World. In this regard, this report focuses on three important issues: the mechanisms and effects of the unique attributes of social media on social events, the manipulation of information by multiple interest groups and the disruption of political agendas caused by fake news, and the "institutional" disputes between countries caused by global social media platforms. Based on this, this report identifies the need for China to take vigilant and preventive measures, proposing an inclusive regulatory framework for social media at the domestic level, as well as the need to be alert to the security threats posed by international disinformation chains at the international level.
