Abstract

The recent plan of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to visit Taiwan has sparked a new round of tensions in U.S.-China relations. According to the available information, Pelosi will likely visit Taiwan around August 3. We should calmly observe and incorporate the provocative behavior of Pelosi's visit into the broader scope of U.S. policy towards China (Taiwan), closely monitor the activities of U.S. aircraft and ships, and gradually bolster nuclear deterrence, while applying extreme pressure on the DPP authorities through "sub-war" tactics, so as to harness its power and turn "danger" into "opportunities". In this way, we can gradually change the status quo of the Taiwan Strait, and promote national unity.

In recent years, a comprehensive policy of U.S. strategic containment and suppression of China has become central to U.S.’ China policy and its backing of Taiwan has also become evident. U.S.-Taiwan military cooperation has shown an unstoppable trend of deepening and expanding. Long before the concentration of anti-Chinese elements in the U.S. Congress, voices of support for Taiwan and the protection of Taiwan were audible and clear. Since the Biden administration took office, there have been six "visits" to Taiwan by congressional delegations (including single-person groups), but none of them can compare with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is second in the line of presidential succession (after the vice president). As the first female speaker of the House and one of the most powerful women in American history, Pelosi, a Democrat, possesses extraordinary political skills and influence. She has a long history of holding extremely negative and hardline views towards China. In April, she had planned to travel to Taiwan from Japan but was forced to cancel her trip at the last minute due to the coronavirus. Her recently scheduled August visit to Taiwan that was announced in mid-July has since caused an new uproar, and the U.S.-China relationship is facing new challenges.
