【Abstract

The Arctic region, i.e. the area north of the Arctic Circle, is one of the last large unexplored lands on earth. It is rich in natural resources. The route through the Arctic region is the shortest distance between the eastern and western hemispheres. Because of its geographical location and huge economic potential, the geopolitical and strategic importance of the Arctic cannot be ignored. The region has become competition spot among major powers. Although China has started involving in Arctic construction at a relatively late stage, it has made a lot of efforts with obvious accomplishment. In light of the changing China - US - Russia relationship, the United States has shifted its strategic focus to the Indo-Pacific region in order to focus on China. China urgently needs to invest more in the Arctic region. In this way, it can not only pursue more national interests in the region, but more importantly, hold the U.S. at bay strategically through cooperation with Russia and other countries. The development and construction of the Arctic shipping lanes is an important entry point for China.
